The Essential Role of Pure Water in Laboratory Settings: Understanding Lab Water Types and Purification System

Writer: LabwareLabware

Lab water, also known as laboratory-grade water, refers to water that has been purified to meet specific standards for use in scientific research, experiments, and laboratory procedures. The quality of lab water is crucial because impurities can interfere with experiments, leading to inaccurate results.

TYPE I - Ultrapure Water

  • Resistivity: 18.2 MΩ·cm at 25°C

  • Total Organic Carbon: < 5 ppb

  • Applications: Sensitive analytical techniques like HPLC, GC-MS, ICP-MS, molecular biology applications (PCR, DNA sequencing), and cell culture

TYPE II - Pure Water

  • Resistivity: >1 MΩ·cm at 25°C

  • Total Organic Carbon: < 50 ppb

  • Applications: General lab applications, buffer preparation, media preparation, and some analytical techniques

TYPE III - RO Water

  • Resistivity: >0.05 MΩ·cm at 25°C

  • Total Organic Carbon: < 200 ppb

  • Applications: Glassware rinsing, water baths, and feed water for Type I water systems
